If you have had anesthesia with sedation for your procedure, please follow these guidelines:
Rest at home with moderate activity as tolerated. There are minimal restrictions on lifting, bending and exercise as long as you are not overexerting yourself.
Cold compresses (frozen peas in a clean Ziploc bag) for the first three days after surgery. You will want to try and do cold compresses 20 minutes out of every hour you are awake. You do not need to do them in the middle of the night.
Warm compresses (clean cotton sock filled with uncooked rice and warmed in the microwave) can be used after three days of cold compresses until you return for follow up. You will want to do warm compresses 4 times a day for 15-20 minutes.
Ointment (if prescribed) you will want to apply it 4 times a day. Keep the incision site clean, free of crusting and moist with ointment at all times. If the ointment gets in your eyes, it may blur vision but will not harm the eyes.
*Reminder: a little ointment goes a long way
Discomfort in the operated area may be treated with Extra-Strength Tylenol or
the prescribed pain medication (Hydrocodone-acetaminophen). Avoid
Aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, Motrin,
naproxen, etc. for 3-7 days after surgery, unless required for a medical
condition.

After eyelid surgery, the upper lids do not blink completely due to the anesthesia and surgery. In order to prevent dryness of the eye and provide comfort to the eye, ointment should be put in the eye 4 times a day. You may also use lubricating eyedrops 4 times a day as needed.
Do not pull on the upper lid. To apply the ointment, place a small amount of ointment in the insider corner of the eye. Blinking a few times will help spread the ointment in the eye.
Using the ointment will blur your vision but will not cause harm to the eye.
Ointment should be kept on the incision line. Apply ointment 4 times a day, making sure you clean off the old ointment before applying the new ointment.

You may notice some slight oozing of blood along the incision, or some bloody tears. A small amount of this is normal. If it should
persist or worsen, please call Dr. Dal Canto.
It is OK to shower and wash around the surgical area gently starting the day after surgery. Do not aim the water directly at the
incisions.

An incision was made in the inside of the eyelid during surgery. Therefore, some irritation and foreign body sensation in the eye is normal. To help this, and decrease scarring on the inside of the eyelid, ointment and/or drops MUST be put in the eye 4 times a day until seen in clinic for the post-operative visit. You can use the drops during the day and ointment at bedtime, or ointment throughout.
** DO NOT PULL ON THE LOWER LID. ** To apply: Look up and place the ointment just above the eyelashes of the lower lid. The ointment will spread over the eye when you blink.
Using the ointment will blur your vision. If it is necessary for you to travel, please arrange for someone to drive.
Ice / cold packs (frozen peas in a clean Ziploc bag work best!) will help decrease swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Use them for 15 minutes of every hour, while awake, for the first 3 days. If you cannot do it so often, use cold packs at least 4 times a day.
DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE.
Take the antibiotic pills by mouth as directed until they are all finished.

The surgery involved your nasal passageway. A mild nosebleed is normal. DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE until seen for follow-up as this can cause a severe nosebleed.
If a severe nosebleed occurs, follow these guidelines:
You may notice some bloody tears or some slight oozing of blood along the incision. A small amount of this is normal.
If you have a skin incision, use the ointment on the stitches 4 times a day. Sutures will be removed during your follow-up visit.
Buy over-the-counter saline (“Ocean”) nasal spray. Use the Saline spray 2-4 per day to help reduce crusting in the nose. Use the prescription nasal spray (Nasacort) twice a day on the operated side.
Use the prescription eye drops (Maxitrol) 4 times a day in the operated eye.
Take the antibiotic pills by mouth as directed until they are all finished.
If you have a stent in the inside corner of your eye, try not to pull on it. If you have irritation from the stent, over-the-counter artificial tear drops (Refresh®, Genteal®, Systane®) may help. The irritation generally improves after several days.
Ice/cold packs (frozen peas in a clean Ziploc bag work best!) will help decrease swelling, bruising, and discomfort, if present. Use them at least 4 times a day for 20 minutes at a time.
